Florian Wiegand to become Munich Philharmonic’s artistic director

Der derzeitige Konzertchef der Salzburger Festspiele Florian Wiegand wird ab September 2025 Paul Müller als Intendant der Münchner Philharmoniker nachfolgen. Das hat die Vollversammlung des Stadtrats am 3.7.2024 entschieden. Damit folgt sie dem Vorschlag des

Florian Wiegand, who is currently music director of the Salzburg Festival, will succeed Paul Müller as the Munich Philharmonic’s artistic director as of September 2025. With this decision, taken at their plenary meeting on 3 July 2024, the city council  is following the proposal of Head of Cultural Affairs Anton Biebl based on a recommendation from the selection committee, which conducted a multi-stage selection process.

 

Florian Wiegand (50) was born in Munich and studied Cultural Management in Potsdam, in Leicester (UK) and at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (USA). He is music director of the Salzburg Festival since 2012 and additionally took on the management of the Festival’s media department in 2016.  Florian Wiegand is a jury member of the Salzburg Festival’s Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award and has been regularly lecturing in the Executive Master in Arts Administration course at the University of Zurich since 2019.
