Winners was the official British entry for the Best International Film category at the 95th Academy Awards in 2023. The film alludes to the 2017 Academy Awards, when Asghar Farhadi won the Oscar for his The Salesman, but shunned the awards ceremony in protest against Donald Trump’s policies. It is no coincidence that the film also contains references to milestones in Iranian film history.
