Richard Wagner penned his Siegfried Idyll as a personal birthday present for his young wife Cosima. Opera aficionados will recognise leitmotifs from the composer’s music drama Siegfried.
Conductor Nathalie Stutzmann also presents a rarity: Lachrimae antiquae stems from a collection of laments by the Renaissance composer John Dowland. Robert Schumann did not look back quite as far as the Renaissance with his Symphony No 2, but his intensive study of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works is clearly evident here.
