Musicians from Israel and Munich will share the stage as members of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra perform together in this special concert on the eve of the 80th anniversary celebrations of the war’s end.

The bridge between the two orchestras is Lahav Shani, who is principal conductor of the Israel Philharmonic since 2020 and will take on the same role with the Munich Philharmonic from 2026.

The concert features two composers of Jewish descent. German-born Tzvi Avni and his family fled their home in Saarland amidst the Nazis’ racial mania. Gustav Mahler’s works were, like those of many composers who the Nazis defined as being of “non-Aryan” descent,  also banned from radio and concert stages in the Third Reich. Malte Arkona, as the evening’s narrator, will provide background information on the two works.

Programme

  • Tzvi Avni: Prayer for string orchestra
  • Gustav Mahler: Symphony No 6 in A minor, Tragic

With

  • Lahav Shani, conductor
  • Members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic
  • Malte Arkona, narrator
