The first bars of the Christmas Oratorio, which Johann Sebastian Bach composed for the church services between Christmas Day and Epiphany, are a familiar prelude to Christmas and set the festive mood.

The first bars of the Christmas Oratorio, which Johann Sebastian Bach composed for the church services between Christmas Day and Epiphany, are a familiar prelude to Christmas and set the festive mood.

For many, Christmas begins with the timpani solo, the flutes and oboes and the ensuing jubilation of the tutti strings, blasts from the trumpets and the polyphonic chorus. Powerful opening and closing choruses, recitatives, arias, lullabies and moving chorales bring the miracle of Christmas to life.

The six cantatas of the immortal masterpiece will be performed by the Munich Bach Choir and Orchestra together with renowned soloists. Since its foundation in 1954 by Karl Richter, the choir and orchestra have been inextricably linked with vibrant Bach interpretations inspired by historical performance practice. Karl Richter led the ensemble to international renown in its first decades, especially through major worldwide tours. Since the autumn of 2023, the choir and orchestra’s artistic director is Johanna Soller.
